If someone is logged on and a process initiates a shutdown by calling the Windows Exit-WindowsEx function, a message is sent to that session s Csrss instructing it to perform the shutdown. Csrss in turn impersonates the caller and sends an RPC message to Winlogon, telling it to perform a system shutdown. Winlogon then impersonates the currently logged-on user (who might or might not have the same security context as the user who initiated the system shutdown) and calls ExitWindowsEx with some special internal flags. Again, this call causes a message to be sent to the Csrss process inside that session, requesting a system shutdown. This time, Csrss sees that the request is from Winlogon and loops through all the processes in the logon session of the interactive user (again, not the user who requested a shutdown) in reverse order of their shutdown level. A process can specify a shutdown level, which indicates to the system when they want to exit with respect to other processes, by calling SetProcessShutdownParameters. Valid shutdown levels are in the range 0 through 1023, and the default level is 640. Explorer, for example, sets its shutdown level to 2 and Task Manager specifies 1. with more control over the life cycle of a request. The primary purpose of the PRG pattern is to avoid duplicate form submissions; the trick used for this purpose is redirecting to a page that just renders rather than having the posted command render the new form directly. The PRG pattern is not specific to ASP.NET MVC and can easily be used with Web Forms, too. The problem is that with Web Forms, the postback mechanism is so natural and fully integrated in the rendering cycle that nobody would even think of using a redirect. If you want to update a Web Forms page, you simply bind server controls to fresh data and go. In ASP.NET MVC, conversely, you work at a lower abstraction level and can get full control of the rendering process. So when the PRG pattern is used, the entire content of the ModelState object is lost, including any validation messages. Consider the following code snippet:

Even when dynamic updates are enabled for a particular zone, in some scenarios it might be necessary to add host records manually to that zone. For example, in Figure 3-14 a company named Contoso, Inc., uses the domain name contoso.com for both its public namespace and its internal Active Directory domain. In this case the public Web server named www.contoso.com is located outside the Active Directory domain and performs updates only on the public DNS server authoritative for contoso.com. Internal clients, however, point their DNS requests toward internal DNS servers. Because the A record for www.contoso.com is not updated dynamically on these internal DNS servers, the record must be added manually for internal clients to resolve the name and connect to the public Web server. Another case in which you might need to add host records manually is when you have a UNIX server on your network. For example, in Figure 3-15 a company named Fabrikam, Inc., uses a single Active Directory domain named fabrikam.com for its private network. The network also includes a UNIX server named App1.fabrikam.com that runs an application critical to the company s daily operations. Because UNIX servers cannot perform dynamic updates, you need to add a host record for App1 on the DNS server hosting the fabrikam.com zone. Otherwise, users will not be able to connect to the application server when they specify it by FQDN.
